21 Year Old Manages to Reverse Law on Social Media

A petition in the courts by a 21 year old woman met with success in the Supreme Court in India this Tuesday. India’s highest court reversed a law that allowed the authorities to arrest based on offensive comments on social media. After a two year campaign by free speech activists, the Supreme Court stated that the law was “unconstitutional” and “hit at the root of liberty and freedom of expression, the two cardinal pillars of democracy.” Though this is a relief for many, it is only a small step as censorship continues within India. Many still argue that “there is so much more that needs to be done.”
