An Unusual Nigerian Election

In Nigeria’s recent election, former general Muhammadu Buhari became president of Nigeria. He has been elected several times before, though has had a different approach to how he would lead the nation. Mr. Buhari has spent a long time convincing the people of Nigeria that he has left the military barracks behind and is now a democrat, and his past does not reflect the present.

Unfortunately, a peaceful democratic transition is unusual in Africa even today. Therefore, an award was created called the Ibrahim Prize that celebrates excellence in African Leadership. It grants any African leader who was elected democratically, served his term peacefully and demonstrated good leadership $5 million USD over ten years and $200 000 USD per year for life thereafter.
