Blackfish, a documentary about the mistreatment of killer whales got wider public attention when 21 million people watched it on CNN. The documentary looks into the killing of a SeaWorld trainer by a whale called Tilikum. It attributes the killing to madness in the whale as a result of being in captivity in the circus-like environment at SeaWorld.
SeaWorld’s attendance and profits have been hit as more people are getting aware of the distress caused to animals in captivity. As a result, SeaWorld has been on a great Public Relations exercise to show the world how it has improved the treatment of its animals.
