Egypt’s First Democratic Leader Sentenced

Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, who was elected after the Arab Spring, the revolutionary wave of demonstrations and protests in the Arab World,  has just been sentenced to twenty years in prison.

Morsi served as President for about a year. His presidency led to unrest and divisions within Egyptian society. Eventually, he was overthrown by the military in July 2013.
