The Nirbhaya case in 2012, where a girl was gang raped in Delhi and later died in hospital, brought world attention to violence against women in India. As a result of this brutal rape, there were protests all over the country which led the government to pass a series of laws in the last few years. The three major laws focused on fast track courts, witness protection and the death penally for rape cases in which the victim dies or is left in a vegetative state. It is to be seen how effective these laws will be in protecting women but this incident and the protests after have led to a national movement for gender equality. National and International campaigns promoting women’s rights and gender equality continue to flourish across India. An example of this is PRI.org which just launched a site called Her Rights promoting all the wonderful things people are doing across the nation for gender equality.
