On Wednesday Nutella lovers across the world were mortified to learn that their much loved spread contained an ingredient that might be carcinogenic. Nutella is made with processed palm oil which in excessive amounts can be detrimental to your health. Palm oil becomes carcinogenic when processed above 393 degrees as it is with Nutella. As a result of this, stores in Italy have not only been removing Nutella and Nutella products from their shelves but also many other products which contain palm oil.
Naturally, Ferrero, the company behind Nutella, has been defending its product stating that the palm oil used in production is heavily refined and there is only a very small quantity included in the spread. Nutella later released a statement on Twitter stating that ‘Safety is our top priority. We carefully select raw materials & use production processes w/ strict quality criteria to ensure safe products.’
This news has come as a surprise to many people, however others argue that it has been common knowledge that palm oil is used in Nutella and palm oil is only dangerous in excessive amounts. So this news might not change the breakfast habits of many!
