In December 2012, 23 year old Jyoti Singh was gang raped in New Delhi. She was on her way home from a movie with her friend, when a group of six men came and attacked them. She was critically injured and died in hospital a few days later.
Recently the BBC produced a documentary called “India’s Daughter.” The documentary has interviews with one of the men convicted of killing her as well as interviews with his lawyers and family. After being shown for a short while in India, it was banned by the government as they felt it depicted India in a bad light. Ironically banning the documentary got India even more negative publicity. Free speech advocates felt that this documentary needed to be shown for lessons to be learned. However, some felt that the documentary was myopic and did not give a complete picture.
